Mary (Russian Mashen'ka or Masen'ka) is the debut novel by Vladimir Nabokov. novel. The novel was first published in 1926 under the pen name V. Sirin by Russian-language publisher Slovo. Mary is the tale of Lev Glebovich's life as an Russian emigrant and ex-White Guard officer who is forced out of Russia due to the Russian Revolution. Ganin is now living in Berlin with Klara the young Russian girl, and his Landlady Lydia Nikolaevna Dorn. He also encounters Aleksey Ivanovich Alfyorov in an elevator that is dark and deteriorating in the beginning of the story. Ganin discovers from Alfyorov that Mary who was his first love has become his wife. He also snaps an image. Ganin is stunned to discover that this is the case and breaks off his relationship with Lyudmila. Ganin is engrossed in the memories of his time spent with Mary in Russia and what Ganin claims were the "happiest moments" of his life. Ganin is in awe of Mary's dream and cannot allow Alfyorov to be with his heart to. He is determined to reunite with Mary whom he believes is in love with Ganin.
